Overview: Wisconsin Literacy, Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing literacy across Wisconsin, is seeking a detail-oriented and skilled Staff Accountant. The successful candidate will play a critical role in supporting our financial operations, ensuring compliance with federal guidelines, and maintaining the integrity of our financial data. This role focuses on payroll processing, balance reconciliations, journal entries, audit preparation, and sub-award document review.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Payroll Processing:
  • Process bi-weekly payroll accurately and on time.
  • Maintain payroll records and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Respond to payroll-related inquiries and resolve discrepancies.
  1. Account Reconciliations:
  • Perform monthly reconciliations of bank accounts and general ledger accounts.
  • Investigate and resolve discrepancies to maintain accurate financial records.
  1. Journal Entries:
  • Prepare and post journal entries ensuring accuracy and adherence to accounting standards.
  • Maintain supporting documentation for all journal entries.
  1. Audit Support:
  • Assist in preparing for annual audits, including gathering and organizing required documentation.
  • Collaborate with external auditors to provide necessary information and address inquiries.
  1. Sub-Award Document Review:
  • Review sub-awardee financial documentation for compliance with federal and organizational guidelines.
  • Provide feedback to sub-awardees on corrections or missing information as needed.
  1. Financial Reporting and Compliance:
  • Ensure all financial activities comply with Uniform Guidance and other applicable standards.
  • Support the finance team in preparing internal and external financial reports.
  1. Additional Duties:
  • Support ad hoc financial projects and process improvements.
  • Collaborate with other departments to address financial needs or concerns.
  • Other duties as assigned 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Accounting.
  • Minimum of 2 years of accounting experience, preferably in a nonprofit setting.
  • Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel.
  • Familiarity with Uniform Guidance and federal grant compliance is highly desirable.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management abilities.
  • Effective communication skills and a collaborative work style.

Work Environment:

  • Flexible work arrangements, including hybrid options, may be available with access to reliable, high speed internet.
  • Must be based in Wisconsin and available for occasional in-person meetings in the Madison.
