The Social Media Strategist is responsible for leading the creation and execution of digital content across all social platforms. This role ensures the station’s mission, editorial standards and community engagement goals are met through innovative, data-driven, audience-first digital storytelling.

The position requires a blend of creative vision, editorial judgment, team leadership, and technical expertise in digital and social-media production, with a strong understanding of public media values and audiences. An ideal candidate is highly organized, thinks creatively about content strategy, approaches work with a positive and enterprising spirit, and thrives within the structure of the editorial process.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Strategy & Leadership

  • Develop and implement comprehensive social-media strategies to grow audience reach, engagement and brand relevance in alignment with public media’s mission.
  • Lead and inspire the organization’s content creators by providing clear guidance, feedback and professional development.
  • Oversee content planning, scheduling and publishing across platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and emerging channels.
  • Collaborate with broadcast, editorial, marketing and community engagement teams to amplify on-air content and station initiatives through digital channels.
  • As a content leader, physical presence in the office during typical business hours is required four days a week (per the organizational handbook), with flexibility for offsite projects and other tasks directly related to the content production function.
  • Physical presence during meetings is required, with the same flexibility noted above.

Content Creation & Production

  • Lead the production of original, platform-appropriate content — including video, graphics, stories and live streams — for social media and digital platforms.
  • Repackage and promote broadcast segments for digital consumption with daily deadlines.
  • Ensure all content upholds the highest journalistic standards, accessibility and inclusivity, reflecting the station’s commitment to diversity and community service.
  • Write, edit and supervise the creation of scripts, headlines and visual storyboards for digital-first storytelling.
  • Work with the Director of Digital Content to manage the editorial calendar, with a specific focus on social-media content.

Analytics & Optimization

  • Monitor, analyze and report on key performance metrics (engagement, reach, retention, etc.) to inform social-media strategy and optimize content.
  • Stay current with trends in digital media, audience behavior and platform algorithms to maximize impact and audience growth.
  • Use data-driven insights to refine social-media approaches and campaign effectiveness.

Project & Team Management

  • Manage digital production workflows, budgets, timelines and resource allocation to ensure timely and cost-effective delivery of content.
  • Foster a collaborative, innovative and inclusive team environment to ensure all voices have an opportunity to be heard.
  • Coordinate with legal, sponsorship and external partners as needed for branded content, integrations and events.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, digital media or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Demonstrated expertise in social-media strategy, content creation and analytics across multiple platforms.
  • Strong editorial judgment, writing and storytelling skills tailored to digital-first audiences.
  • Proficiency with digital production tools (e.g., video editing, graphic design, CMS, analytics platforms).
  • Excellent organizational, communication and project management skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Five years of experience in digital-content production, with at least three years in a leadership or senior producer role, ideally within media, journalism or public broadcasting.
  • Experience managing and mentoring creative teams committed to diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Deep understanding of public media’s mission, values and audience-engagement strategies.
  • Experience with live-event production, branded content and/or community engagement initiatives.
  • Familiarity with SEO, accessibility standards and digital marketing best practices.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate and occasionally loud during music events. The employee is exposed to outdoor weather conditions during work-related travel.

Our creative Walker’s Point office includes a full kitchen, green roof/deck and performance space. We currently operate on a hybrid schedule with a minimum of four (4) days per week in the office.
