RESPONSIBILITIES: This is a new project that builds on the success of MCCY’s current Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Housing First initiatives. Many people, in particular those with significant trauma histories, merit additional support beyond a Housing First approach to transform their circumstances and increase their opportunities for long-term housing, safety, and equity-building.  To achieve these goals, an economic justice coordinator will pick up where Housing First leaves off.  This professional will:

  • Provide housing advocacy as part of a MCCY Housing First project team dedicated to helping people obtain safe, stable housing
  • Work intensively with people who have achieved safe housing through our advocacy efforts and want to remain free from violence and future financial dependence on others
  • Support people in creating and executing an actionable plan to maintain housing over the long haul by getting or keeping a job, paying the bills on time, and keeping up a well-maintained household
  • Coordinate and/or deliver seminars and support groups dedicated to increasing independence (building credit, budgeting, learning how to save to buy a house, etc.) and concerns about safety (how to prevent sexual abuse of their children, how to keep a clean and organized home, how to set up and use security cameras, etc.)
  • Serve as a liaison to Employ Milwaukee, the workforce development board of Milwaukee County that will provide coaching, career training, apprenticeships and more to the adults and youth we refer
  • Partner with Employ Milwaukee to build a wraparound, trauma-informed support system to assist people seeking education and/or employment advancement

The above is intended to describe the general content and requirements of this job. It is not meant to be construed as an exhaustive statement of responsibilities, but rather, a general overview of the position’s duties.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Patience and passion to work with MCCY leadership to co-design and oversee a new project dedicated to promoting economic justice and equity for families
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with individuals from diverse economic, racial, ethnic, and LGBTQIA+ backgrounds
  • At least 5 years of combined education and experience in strengthening economic supports (Housing First, financial literacy, workforce development, family-friendly policy advocacy, etc.)
  • Working knowledge of the dynamics and effects of domestic violence, sexual assault, and child maltreatment
  • Driver’s license, automobile, and adequate insurance coverage
  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends
