Assistant Director of Prospect Research

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE:

This position will support the college’s fundraising efforts through prospect identification, prospect research, and prospect data management. Research efforts will focus primarily on individual donors but will also include corporate and foundation research. This position will help ensure that prospect data is accurately recorded within the university’s database and will work collaboratively with development officers and operations staff.

DUTIES

  • Respond to research requests from development officers and leadership, devise and implement prospect identification projects, and handle other research and data intensive projects.
  • Using a variety of prospect research tools, screen and assess existing and potential donors, conduct detailed prospect research, and synthesize findings into written summaries. In accordance with established methodologies, compute philanthropic capacity range.
  • Assess prospect status and advise development officers on prospect strategies.
  • Read call reports to keep apprised of development activity.
  • Accurately record changes to prospect data in database as needed.
  • Assist with the preparation of prospect-related meeting materials and assist with meetings as needed.
  • Assist with the documentation of prospect research policies and procedures.
  • Other projects, as needed.

Knowledge and Skills Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree, with an appreciation for fundraising within a private liberal arts college environment. 1-2 years of experience in development, research, writing-intensive, or related work.
  • Strategic thinker and excellent writer.
  • Demonstrated ability to synthesize a high volume of information (including complex material) and communicate clearly.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines in a high-volume, fast-paced work environment while maintaining quality and accuracy.
  • Team player with the ability to work well independently.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Key traits: Inquisitive, curious, persistent, resourceful, and attentive to detail.
  • Proficiency in using online databases for research purposes and experience using Microsoft Word and Excel, as well as an ERP/CRM database.
  • Experience with prospect data management systems and/or report writing tools desired.

EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:

Must have successful completion of criminal record check, driving record check (as applicable), and reference checks.
