Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin is the leading local hunger-relief organization in the state with locations in Milwaukee and Appleton. JOB PURPOSE: 

The Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and audit-ready facility by performing routine cleaning, sanitation, and light maintenance tasks. This role plays a critical part in ensuring the warehouse and all common areas meet food safety and cleanliness standards at all times. Additionally, the Custodian will assist in moving materials as needed using a forklift or pallet jack and respond to basic repair requests.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Maintain a clean and orderly warehouse, volunteer activity space, welcome center, breakrooms, and restrooms. 
  • Collect and dispose of trash throughout the facility as needed. 
  • Sweep, mop, scrub, and vacuum floors, including daily cleaning of warehouse floor markings. 
  • Regularly clean and pressure-wash the waste disposal area to ensure sanitation standards are met. 
  • Remove dust, cobwebs, and debris from facility structures. 
  • Follow and complete all cleaning checklists (daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly). 
  • Operate floor-cleaning equipment in the warehouse and volunteer activity areas. 
  • Service and restock restrooms as needed. 
  • Properly mix and use cleaning solutions in accordance with safety and food safety standards. 
  • Store chemicals, cleaning equipment, and supplies safely, ensuring compliance with AIB food safety standards. 
  • Collect and bale cardboard for recycling. 
  • Move heavy furniture, equipment, and supplies manually or with powered hand trucks. 
  • Maintain clear and safe outdoor areas by removing debris and, in winter, clearing snow and spreading de-icing chemicals. 
  • Operate forklifts and powered pallet jacks to assist in maintaining warehouse cleanliness. 
  • Perform light maintenance tasks as needed. 
  • Follow all food safety and sanitation procedures to ensure the facility remains audit-ready at all times. 
  • Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Commitment to understand and support FAEW’s mission, vision, and effective actions to end food insecurity and its causes
  • Respect for the people FAEW serves and commitment to learn the causes of their food insecurity and need
  • High school diploma or equivalent related experience. 
  • Less than one-year experience performing similar responsibilities 
  • Ability to follow established procedures to maintain facility according to standards
  • Ability to use mechanized equipment to perform responsibilities
  • Ability to follow direction with some supervision
  • Demonstrate the ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be open-minded of differing opinions and views.
  • A positive, team-oriented mindset with a “can-do” approach to supporting the organization, demonstrating cross-functional collaboration and a focus on developing solutions.
  • Ability to work safely following FAEW safety procedures.
  • Previous forklift experience desired, must be able to be certified within two weeks of hire. 
  • Ability to work at a fast pace with high level of accuracy and attention to detail. 

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk, bend, twist, climb, reach above shoulders, kneel, squat, sit, stand, talk and/or hear, and/or use hands to lift, handle, or touch objects, tools, or controls. The employee must have the ability to work in a cold environment -10 to +10 degrees Fahrenheit. The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds while moving inventory. The mental and physical requirements described here are representative of those that must be met by an individual to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.

Protective Clothing Required: Close-toed shoes, Warm clothing when working in cold environment.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

Work is performed in a warehouse environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high. The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an individual encounter while performing the essential functions of this position.
