Title:  Major Gifts Officer

Report to: VP of Development & Communications 

Status: Full-time, Regular

FLSA Classification: Exempt

Job Summary:  Community Smiles Dental (CSD) is seeking a dedicated and relationship-focused Major Gifts Officer to grow our fundraising capacity and support an upcoming capital campaign. This position will work closely with the VP of Development & Communications to build meaningful relationships with individual and corporate donors to support both annual fundraising goals and a capital campaign to fund future organizational growth.  

Major Responsibility Areas:

  • Supports mission, vision and core values of Community Smiles Dental emphasizing a first-in-class donor experience through development work in the areas of donor portfolio and major gift management inclusive of corporate giving and new donor acquisition. 
  • Maintains strong and positive working and interpersonal relationships with all employed at Community Smiles Dental including interns, externs and volunteers.
  • Positively contributes to a highly inclusive culture where all team members can thrive and represent CSD’s core values to the best of their abilities.
  • Understands and is able to comply with all employment policies and procedures defined by Community Smiles Dental. 
  • Performs duties and responsibilities under the following major responsibility areas: 
  • In the area of a capital campaign:
    • Support the planning and execution of a capital campaign to fund CSD’s growth and expansion  
    • Identify, cultivate, and secure major gifts toward the campaign
    • Work with leadership to build campaign messaging and engage donors at all levels  
    • Monitor campaign progress and ensure donor stewardship throughout the campaign lifecycle  
  • In the area of donor portfolio management & major gift fundraising:  
    • Manage a portfolio of 100-125 donors, ensuring personalized engagement and relationship to the mission and organization 
    • Cultivate relationships with current and prospective donors, focusing on major gifts that align with CSD’s priorities  
    • Secure new major gifts to meet both annual and capital campaign goals  
  • In the area of new donor acquisition:
    • Identify and engage potential donors, developing new partnerships to generate sustained financial support 
    • Maintain ongoing communication with prospects to foster long term relationships and meaningful engagement  
  • In the area of donor stewardship & recognition:  
    • Provide individualized stewardship and recognition for major donors to build long-term loyalty  
    • Develop creative ways to engage and retain donors through personalized touchpoints and exclusive opportunities  
  • In the area of public representation: 
    • Represent CSD at community events, donor meetings, and networking opportunities to build relationships and raise the organization’s profile  
    • Serve as an ambassador for the organization, effectively communicating CSD’s mission and impact to external stakeholders

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, nonprofit management, or a related field.  
  • 3-5 years of experience in development, fundraising, or sales, with a focus on relationship management.
  • Prior experience in cultivating relationships and securing financial commitments from donors and corporate partners.  
  • Prior experience in cross-functionality with various internal and external constituents.
  • Prior experience in writing, presentation creation and delivery, and communication skills.  
  • Ability to work or use Google Suite and/or Microsoft Office for email, calendar, file creation, sharing and storage.
  • Ability to work or use CRM systems, design systems, and donor contact management systems.

Preferred Requirements 

  • Prior experience in related, community-based or nonprofit fundraising and development. 
  • Proficient in Google Office Suite, DonorPerfect or comparable CRM system, Adobe, and Constant Contact is preferred.

  • Superior interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate professionally with a culturally diverse group of donors, team members and volunteers. 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and instruction.
  • Ability to contribute to the priorities and needs of the team.
  • Ability to organize and complete multiple tasks simultaneously with close attention to detail and prioritization to meet deadlines. 
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in regards to donor, patient and protected information.
  • Ability to follow safety protocols.
  • Ability to meet the work hours and schedules of the position, including some nights and weekends as needed.

Physical and Mental Demands

  • Ability to work with a computer and frequently look at computer monitors throughout the day. 
  • Ability to sit and/or stand for long periods throughout the clinic day. 
  • Ability to occasionally lift and/or slide 10-20lbs at a time.
  • Ability to work in an environment with frequent moderate to high noise levels. 
  • Ability to work in close proximity with other team members, donors, and patients. 
  • Ability to effectively respond to varying situations using logical reasoning and decision making throughout the work day.
  • Ability to perform repetitive hand and wrist motions to accomplish small motor skills.
