The Seasonal Gardner has two green thumbs, respect for the native landscape, and enjoys increasing access to nature to help those experiencing profound life challenges. The Gardener works closely with our master gardener, staff, and volunteers to manage twelve garden beds including Wisconsin native plants, showy cultivars, colorful perennials, vegetables and herbs. The position runs from May through August averaging 12 hours per week with a flexible schedule. Compensation is $17/hour.
Essential Job Duties
- Maintain and improve 12 gardens including plants, flower beds, and shrubbery. This involves weeding, watering, planting, fertilizing, invasive species management and other upkeep, as well as caring for vegetable and herb raised gardens.
- Direct and supervise volunteers who assist with maintaining gardens. Including weekly volunteers, occasional corporate groups, and people with cognitive and intellectual disabilities who help us water twice a week.
- Participate as a member of the garden team and meet weekly with team members to strategize and set priorities.
- Additional gardening duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Be able to lift 10-30 pounds frequently and 30-50 occasionally.
- Enjoy managing landscape and gardens while working outside for several hours at a time.
- Ability to work and interact with diverse populations, supervise volunteers, and is a team player.
- Can work independently, is detailed oriented and has excellent planning skills.
- Reliable transportation.
Education and Experience
- High School graduate.
- Experience related to landscape maintenance, gardening, native landscaping, or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
