DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITES
Animal
- Ensure that proper food, care and shelter is provided for animals under the care of the Adams County Humane Society (ACHS).
- Ensure that animal quarters and facility are kept cleaned, disinfected and maintained.
- Observe animals on a daily basis for symptoms of illness and/or behavioral problems, making appropriate decisions as necessary.
- Assist with maintenance of records to include but not limited to Pet Point, Bloomerang, the Money Book, medical, adoptions, release, stray and animal inventory.
- Maintain a commitment to the humane attitude, philosophies and policies of ACHS in the performance of his/her duties and respect the dignity and basic rights of each animal, volunteers, staff, BOD and the general public.
Personnel
- Train animal caregivers to screen incoming animals, administer vaccines, and medication, and take temperatures and other prescribed procedures, following the protocol developed by the veterinarian.
- Train animal caregivers with safe handling techniques of animals, cleaning agents and drugs.
- Maintain proper drug records and inventory of supplies.
- Assist with staff supervision, recruiting, training, and performance appraisals in coordination with the shelter manager & BOD.
- Assist with the continuous staff training and development programs to assure staff are aware of new and revised policies, procedures, rules, and regulations.
- Be a team leader and resource person for animal care staff and volunteers utilizing excellent communication skills and leadership styles to foster a team atmosphere.
- Act with professionalism to ensure quality relationships with all departments, volunteers, public, and BOD.
- Investigate and complete accident reports as deemed necessary to the BOD and file required forms, including insurance.
- Be sure the Animal Care Manager (ACM) is performing his/her job satisfactorily.
- Be a liaison to ensure quality relationships with all departments, volunteers, staff, BOD and the general public.
Financial
- Serve as a secondary purchasing agent with authority from first or BOD.
- Assist in the ordering and inventory control of animal supplies and animal care equipment.
- Monitor expenditures within approved budget. Any expenditures over budget or forecast must be preapproved by BOD.
Overall Operation
- Responsible for daily operations of the shelter. Work with the ACM, Animal Care Giver (ACG) and volunteers, including but not limited to assisting with cleaning, feeding, animal care treatments and related testing.
- Responsible for basic facility management including, but not limited to, building maintenance, kennels and vehicle.
- Assist in reviewing and revising shelter forms as needed, with BOD approval.
- Respond according to protocol and procedures to emergency situations.
- Maintain a daily record of monetary transactions (donations, retail, services, etc.).
- Review procedures and implement changes to ensure the optimal operation of the shelter, in coordination with the ACM and BOD.
- Respond to complaints about staff, volunteers and facility procedures and work with the ACM and BOD in difficult situations.
Other Responsibilities
- Maintain and update ACHS website and Facebook page in a timely manner (in alignment with BOD efforts.)
- Support all fundraising efforts as needed including being the face of the shelter when needed.
- Ability to carry out the duties of the ACM and ACG and perform their duties if necessary. Act as shelter manager when manager is out of the shelter.
- Work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays as needed.
- Have a valid driver’s license and a good driving record is a plus.
- Perform any and all other duties and responsibilities as deemed necessary by the BOD.
Qualifications
- Three+ years of experience in a shelter environment or veterinary clinic
- Management experience preferred
- Vet Tech Certification preferred
